Jeep Wrangler 4WD Explained — 2H, 4H, N & 4L

The Transfer-Case Lever · What Every Position Does · How & When to Shift

You climbed into your new Wrangler and noticed there are two levers on the centre console. One is the gear shifter you already know — Park, Reverse, Drive. The second, shorter one is the part that confuses almost every new owner. It's the transfer-case shifter, and it's what makes a Wrangler a real four-wheel drive. This guide explains each position in plain English, when to use it, and exactly how to shift — including the one mistake that can damage your truck.

First: You Have Two Levers, Not One

It helps to separate the two jobs in your head:

  • The main transmission shifter — this is what drives the car. On an automatic it's Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive; on a manual it's your normal H-pattern gearbox. You use this every single time you drive.
  • The shorter transfer-case lever — this selects the drive system: two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, or low-range four-wheel drive. Most of the time it just sits in 2H and you forget it's there. This page is entirely about this second lever.

The lever moves through four positions in a straight line: 2H → 4H → N → 4L. Here's that exact pattern.

The 30-Second Quick Start

If you remember nothing else, remember this.

Pavement → 2H
Dry or wet paved roads and highway. This is your everyday setting — leave it here roughly 95% of the time.
Snow / Slippery → 4H
Snow, ice, gravel, sand or heavy rain. You can shift into 4H while rolling. Most owners only ever need 2H and 4H.
Off-Road → 4L
Steep, slow, serious terrain. Learn how to engage it before you actually need it — you must stop first.
N → Leave It Alone
Transfer-case Neutral is only for flat-towing the Jeep behind a motorhome. It is not a driving mode.

2H — Two-Wheel Drive (Your Default)

In 2H the Wrangler sends power to the rear wheels only. This is your everyday setting and where the lever should sit almost all the time. It's the most fuel-efficient mode and the only correct mode for normal driving on dry, paved roads.

  • Drives like: a normal rear-wheel-drive vehicle.
  • Use it for: dry or wet pavement, the 401, the DVP, the Gardiner — any everyday GTA commute.
  • How often: roughly 95% of your driving. When in doubt on pavement, you want 2H.
Snow & Loose Surfaces

4H — Four-Wheel Drive at Normal Speed

Move the lever to 4H (4-High) and power goes to all four wheels while you keep driving at normal road speeds. This is the mode that earns its keep through a Toronto winter — snow-covered side streets, an icy on-ramp, gravel cottage roads or a sandy beach access.

  • Use it for: snow, ice, gravel, sand, heavy rain and any loose or slippery surface.
  • Shift on the fly: you can move between 2H and 4H while the Jeep is rolling, typically up to about 88 km/h (55 mph). Ease off the throttle, then move the lever firmly and deliberately into position.
  • Same gearing as 2H: 4H drives at normal speeds — it just adds traction to the front axle. No need to crawl.
  • Important: on a part-time system, get back to 2H once you're on clear, dry pavement (see the warning below).
Special Purpose

N — Neutral (Flat-Towing Only)

The N position is transfer-case Neutral, and it confuses people because it is not a driving mode. It fully disconnects the transfer case so all four wheels can roll freely. Its one job is flat-towing — towing the Wrangler with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome or RV.

  • Use it for: flat-towing the Jeep behind an RV — and nothing else.
  • Not for driving: you cannot drive the vehicle in transfer-case Neutral.
  • Follow the manual: the flat-tow engage/disengage steps are precise — always use the exact procedure in your owner's manual.
Off-Road

4L — Four-Wheel Drive Low Range

4L (4-Low) is the Wrangler's off-road superpower. It engages four-wheel drive and a much lower gear set, multiplying engine torque so you can crawl slowly with huge pulling power and strong engine braking. It is built for control at walking pace, not for speed.

  • Use it for: steep climbs and descents, deep snow, mud or sand, rock crawling, and slippery boat ramps.
  • Torque multiplication: low range gears the drivetrain down dramatically — roughly 2.72:1 on Command-Trac and up to 4:1 on the Rubicon's Rock-Trac — so you creep slowly with control and engine braking instead of riding the brakes.
  • Low speed only: 4L is not for highway or even normal road speeds — it's a crawling gear.

How to shift into 4L (step by step)

1. Slow to a near stop — roughly 2–3 mph, walking pace.
2. Put the transmission in Neutral (on a manual, press the clutch in).
3. Move the transfer-case lever firmly and deliberately from 4H past N into 4L.
4. Shift the transmission back into Drive (or release the clutch) and crawl.
To come back out, reverse the steps: near stop, transmission in Neutral, lever back up to 4H or 2H.

⚠️ The One Mistake to Avoid: Don't Use 4WD on Dry Pavement

On a part-time four-wheel-drive system — that's Command-Trac (Sport, Sahara) and Rock-Trac (Rubicon) — you must never drive in 4H or 4L on dry, high-traction pavement. In these systems the front and rear axles are mechanically locked to turn together. On a loose surface they can slip slightly to absorb the difference when you corner. On dry asphalt they can't — so the driveline winds up and fights itself.

This is called "drivetrain binding": you'll feel hopping or chattering in tight turns, and over time it can damage the transfer case, axles and tires. The fix is simple — return to 2H whenever you're back on clear, dry pavement.

The exception: the available full-time Selec-Trac system has a 4WD-Auto mode designed to stay engaged on any surface, including dry pavement — it sends power to the front axle only as needed. If your Wrangler has Selec-Trac, its Auto mode is safe to leave on. If you're not sure which system you have, check your build sheet or just ask us.

Which 4WD System Does Your Wrangler Have?

The lever positions are the same, but the system underneath differs by trim. There are three:

  • Command-Trac — fitted to the Sport and Sahara. A part-time 4WD system with a 2.72:1 low range. Use 4H/4L only off pavement or on loose/slippery surfaces; otherwise stay in 2H.
  • Selec-Trac — an available upgrade (e.g. on some Sahara builds). This is a full-time system: its 4WD-Auto mode can stay engaged on dry pavement and automatically sends power to the front wheels when it detects slip.
  • Rock-Trac — the Rubicon's heavy-duty system. Part-time, with a much deeper 4:1 low range, paired with front and rear locking differentials and an electronic sway-bar disconnect for serious off-roading.

Lockers & the Sway-Bar Disconnect Aren't on the Lever

“Where are the lockers and sway-bar buttons?”

On a Rubicon, the front and rear locking differentials and the electronic sway-bar disconnect are operated by separate switches/buttons on the dashboard — they are not part of the transfer-case lever. They're meant only for low-range, off-road use: you engage 4L first, then use those dash controls when the terrain demands maximum traction or extra front-axle articulation. For everyday and even snow driving, you leave them alone — the lever (2H/4H) is all you touch.

The Short Version

If this is your first Wrangler, this is all you really need on day one.

  • Most of the time, you only need 2H — leave the lever there for all dry-pavement and highway driving.
  • When it's snowy or slippery, use 4H — you can shift into it on the move; shift back to 2H once the road is clear and dry.
  • Learn 4L before you go off-road — it needs you to stop and put the transmission in Neutral first, so practice it once in a safe spot.
  • Leave N alone unless you're flat-towing the Jeep behind an RV.
