Jeep Wrangler Engines: V6, Turbo-4 & the 392 V8
The 2026 (JL) Wrangler Powertrain Guide · 3.6L Pentastar · 2.0L Turbo · 6.4L 392 HEMI
The Jeep Wrangler is one of the few vehicles on the market that still lets you choose between a naturally aspirated V6, a turbocharged four-cylinder, and a big V8 — an unusually wide engine lineup for a midsize SUV. Each one changes the truck's personality completely: the V6 is the classic do-everything choice (and the only one you can still get with a stick), the 2.0L turbo is the efficient daily, and the 6.4L 392 is the loud, fast flagship. This guide breaks down horsepower, torque, fuel economy and who each engine is for.
Covers the current JL-generation Jeep Wrangler. Updated June 2026.

📞 437-371-50073.6L Pentastar V6
The 3.6-litre Pentastar is the engine most Wranglers leave the lot with, and for good reason. It's a proven, well-understood V6 that does a bit of everything — enough power for the highway, enough flexibility for the trail, and a long track record that makes it the easy value pick. Crucially, it's the only Wrangler engine you can still pair with a 6-speed manual transmission, making the Wrangler one of the last new vehicles in Canada you can buy with three pedals. Prefer to let the truck shift for you? The same engine offers a smooth 8-speed automatic.
- Power: 285 hp and 260 lb-ft — balanced and predictable.
- Transmission: available 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic — the only Wrangler with a stick.
- Approx. economy (auto): ~13.1 L/100km city / ~10.2 hwy (≈18/23 mpg US).
- Best for: buyers who want the proven, do-everything Wrangler — and manual purists.
2.0L Turbocharged I4 (eTorque)
Don't let "four-cylinder" fool you. The turbocharged 2.0L, helped by a mild-hybrid eTorque system, actually makes more torque than the V6 — 295 lb-ft versus 260 — and delivers it lower in the rev range, so it feels punchy off the line in city driving. It's also the most fuel-efficient gas Wrangler, which matters on a long DVP commute or a winter full of short trips. The trade-off: it's automatic-only, and some buyers simply prefer the character (and simplicity) of the V6. If your Wrangler will spend most of its life on pavement, this is the thinking person's choice.
- Power: 270 hp and 295 lb-ft — most torque of the two everyday engines.
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic only (no manual).
- Approx. economy: ~11.8 L/100km city / ~10.2 hwy (≈20/23 mpg US) — the efficiency leader of the gas engines.
- Best for: daily drivers and commuters who want torque and lower fuel bills.
6.4L SRT HEMI V8 — "Rubicon 392 / Moab"
This is the engine that turns the Wrangler into something nobody expected: a 470-horsepower, 470-lb-ft V8 monster that can hit highway speeds shockingly fast for a body-on-frame off-roader. The 6.4-litre SRT HEMI lives in the Rubicon 392 (the Moab special edition sits in this family), and it's the most powerful factory Wrangler ever built. It sounds incredible, it's genuinely quick, and it is, unapologetically, a toy. The catch is fuel: expect roughly 18.1 L/100km in the city. Nobody buys a 392 to save money — they buy it because it's ridiculous, and that's the whole point.
- Power: 470 hp and 470 lb-ft — the most powerful factory Wrangler ever.
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic only.
- Approx. economy: ~18.1 L/100km city / ~13.8 hwy (≈13/17 mpg US).
- Best for: buyers chasing maximum power, sound and fun — economy not a concern.
Wrangler 4xe Plug-In Hybrid (Discontinued for 2026)
Worth knowing if you're cross-shopping used or reading older reviews: the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid was a popular option that paired a turbo four-cylinder with electric motors and a battery for a combined output around 375 hp, plus a short stretch of electric-only driving. It was discontinued from the lineup for 2026, so it is not currently offered on a new Wrangler. We mention it only so you're not surprised when you spot 4xe badges on a pre-owned truck — it's recent history, not a current choice.

📞 437-371-5007Which Wrangler Engine Should You Pick?
Forget the spec sheet for a second. The honest answer comes down to how you actually drive.
You want a manual, or just the proven classic → 3.6L V6
If you want three pedals, your decision is made — the V6 is the only Wrangler with a manual, and that alone wins it for a lot of enthusiasts. Even with the automatic, the Pentastar is the sensible, do-everything pick: proven over many years, balanced power, and typically the best value. When in doubt, this is the safe, satisfying choice.
You're commuting and want efficiency + torque → 2.0L Turbo
If your Wrangler is mostly a daily driver — school runs, the 401, the DVP, winter errands — the turbo-4 is the smart money. It makes more torque than the V6 for stronger around-town response, returns the best fuel economy of the gas engines, and pairs only with the slick 8-speed auto. You give up the manual, but you gain real efficiency.
You want maximum power and fun → 6.4L 392 V8
If the point of your Wrangler is to put a grin on your face every time you start it, the 392 is the only answer. 470 horsepower, a soundtrack to match, and surprising straight-line speed make it a genuine event. Just go in clear-eyed: fuel economy is thirsty and it commands a premium. It's a toy — and a glorious one.
A Note on Towing & Capability
Trailer and tow ratings on the Wrangler vary meaningfully by engine, body style (two-door vs four-door), axle ratio and package, so we won't quote a single number that might not apply to the truck you're looking at. If towing matters to your decision, confirm the exact rating for the specific configuration with Golden Mile Chrysler or on jeep.ca before you buy. The right engine and configuration can make a real difference here.
