The Swinging Lady

Toronto's iconic billboard, swinging over Eglinton Avenue East since 1962

A 40-Foot Toronto Landmark

Ask anyone who has driven Eglinton Avenue East through Scarborough and they will know exactly where Golden Mile Chrysler is — even if they have never set foot on the lot. They know it because of the Swinging Lady. For more than sixty years, a 40-foot illuminated figure has perched on a swing above the dealership, gliding back and forth and quietly inviting passing drivers to "swing on by."

She first went up in 1962, back when the dealership was Willison Chrysler. In the decades since, the name on the building has changed and the cars on the lot have changed, but the Swinging Lady has kept swinging — through Toronto winters, summer heat waves, and every era of the city that has grown up around her.

She Dresses for the Season — and Once Went Missing

Part of the charm is that she pays attention to the weather. In summer the Swinging Lady wears a bikini; when the snow arrives off Lake Ontario, she bundles up in a parka. Generations of GTA kids have watched for her seasonal wardrobe change from the back seat on the drive along Eglinton.

She is not just decoration — she is a piece of Toronto and Scarborough car-culture history. The sign has been written up in the local press and is fondly remembered by anyone who grew up in the east end. In the 1980s she briefly went missing, sparking a small civic mystery before she was found and returned to her perch. If anything, the disappearance only cemented her status as a beloved neighbourhood fixture.
