Uber Vehicle Requirements in Toronto (2026)
What Uber and the City of Toronto require of the vehicle — and what it means when you are buying one

To drive UberX in the City of Toronto your vehicle needs four doors, seats for four passengers plus you, a model year no more than seven years old, and a clean, unbranded, non-salvage body that passes an annual inspection by a licensed mechanic. UberXL adds two more seats: six passengers plus the driver. The age limit is set by the City's own bylaw, not by Uber, and it is stricter than most drivers assume.

The Model-Year Rule, Explained Properly
Uber's wording is that the model year must be "7 years or newer" to drive UberX and UberXL in the City of Toronto, the City of Mississauga, the Town of Oakville and Brampton. A vehicle eight to ten years old still qualifies in other parts of the GTA — Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill and the like — but Uber is explicit that an eight-year-old vehicle cannot pick up riders inside the City of Toronto.
The rule underneath Uber's wording is the City of Toronto's. Chapter 546 of the Municipal Code, read through the City's Interpretation Bulletin on vehicle age, says any vehicle used as a private transportation company vehicle "must be replaced by March 31 of the year following the vehicle's seventh model year." Model year counts as year one, so a 2020 is in its seventh model year during 2026 and must be off the platform by March 31, 2027. Two exceptions: zero-emission vehicles have no model-year maximum, and since March 2025 a wheelchair-accessible vehicle may be up to ten model years old.

Our reading of the City bulletin, not the City's own table — the bulletin gives worked examples for taxis and limousines but not for PTC vehicles. Confirm with the City or in the driver app before relying on a specific date.
Condition, Inspection and Tires
Uber requires the vehicle to be in good condition with no cosmetic damage, and it will not accept a salvaged or rebuilt vehicle or one carrying commercial branding. A cheap used van with a rebuilt title is therefore not a cheap Uber van; it is not an Uber van at all.
Every vehicle must pass an inspection by a licensed mechanic every year regardless of its age, and the City's PTC licence requires a Safety Standards Certificate from a City-approved inspection. The City also requires snow tires or all-weather tires on every PTC vehicle from December 1 to April 30, which in practice means owning two sets and having somewhere to keep the one that is off the car.
Registration must be in Ontario for Toronto pickups. Uber accepts official and temporary registration documents and the vehicle does not need to be registered in your name, which is why a financed or family-owned vehicle qualifies without any special arrangement.
Insurance: The Part Nobody Mentions Until a Claim
In Ontario, Uber carries a commercial policy, underwritten by Intact, that covers you from the moment the app is on. You do not apply for it or pay for it separately. It does not, however, replace your personal auto policy, and it does not excuse you from telling your own insurer that the car is used for rideshare. Insurers who find out at claim time can void the personal policy.
Ask your broker about the Ontario rideshare endorsement, OPCF 6A, "Permission to Carry Passengers for Compensation." It removes the exclusion in a standard policy that would otherwise leave a gap between your personal coverage and Uber's, and it costs far less than a commercial policy. Do this before delivery, not after the first fare.
The Driver-Side Requirements, Briefly
This page is about the vehicle, but the driver rules decide when you can start. Uber requires a full Ontario G licence — G1 and G2 are not accepted — and a minimum age of 21. The City requires three years of driving experience, a City-approved training course, and criminal-background and driving-record checks. Once your documents are in, Uber submits a PTC licence application to the City on your behalf, and Uber advises that the licence can take up to twenty business days to process.
Plan the purchase around that timeline. A van delivered the week you apply sits on the driveway for a month while the licence comes through; a van delivered as the licence lands starts earning the same week.

Buy as new as the budget allows. Each model year is one more season of Toronto eligibility, and a used van two years older is two seasons closer to being replaced — that has to be priced into what "cheap" means. A new 2026 Grand Caravan or Pacifica runs to March 31, 2033.
If UberXL is the goal, count seatbelts, not seats in the brochure. A three-row SUV with second-row captain's chairs seats six and misses the XL minimum by one; the bench-seat version of the same SUV clears it. Minivans clear it as standard. And check the title history on any used vehicle: salvage or rebuilt is a hard no on Uber, whatever the price.

How old can a car be to drive Uber in Toronto?
Seven model years or newer for UberX and UberXL pickups in the City of Toronto, per Uber. The City of Toronto's bylaw is the source: a PTC vehicle must be replaced by March 31 of the year following its seventh model year, so in September 2026 the oldest eligible vehicle is a 2020, and it must be replaced by March 31, 2027. Zero-emission vehicles are exempt from the age limit.
Does a minivan qualify for UberXL in Toronto?
Yes. Uber's Toronto requirement for UberXL is a 4-door SUV or minivan with independently opening doors and seats for at least six passengers plus the driver. Sliding rear doors count. What Uber excludes from XL is large passenger vans and commercial trucks, so a twelve-seat Transit or a cargo van does not qualify even though it has the seats.
Do I need winter tires for Uber in Toronto?
The City of Toronto requires snow tires or all-weather tires on every private transportation company vehicle from December 1 to April 30. All-season tires do not satisfy the rule. Budget for a second set and for storage; every CDD6 purchase includes two years of free tire storage at Golden Mile Chrysler.
Can I drive Uber with a financed or leased vehicle?
Yes. Uber does not require you to own the vehicle and accepts a vehicle not registered in your name, so a financed or leased van qualifies on the same terms as one bought outright. Check the kilometre allowance on any lease, because rideshare kilometres exceed a typical allowance quickly, and confirm your lender and insurer both know the vehicle is used for rideshare.
Does my personal car insurance cover Uber trips in Ontario?
Not on its own. Uber's commercial policy covers you while the app is on, but a standard personal policy excludes carrying passengers for compensation, and an insurer that learns of rideshare use at claim time can cancel the policy. Ask your broker for the Ontario rideshare endorsement, OPCF 6A, before your first trip.
