Best Van for UberXL in Toronto

For most Toronto UberXL drivers the best van is a new Chrysler Grand Caravan: seven seats, sliding doors, Stow 'n Go, the lowest-priced new van Golden Mile Chrysler sells, and a 2026 model year that keeps it eligible for Toronto pickups until March 31, 2033. Pay more for a Pacifica if you want eight seats or all-wheel drive. Choose a Toyota Sienna hybrid only if fuel cost outranks purchase price for you — and we do not sell one.

That last sentence is the point of this page. A dealership comparison that concludes "buy what we stock" is not worth reading, so this one names the vehicles we do not sell, says what they do better, and lets you decide. The vehicles are compared on the six things that decide a rideshare van: seatbelt count, doors, drive, fuel, cargo with passengers aboard, and how many Toronto seasons the model year buys.

The Grand Caravan is sold in Canada as one trim, the SXT, which is why the lot has several of them and why it is the van most Toronto XL drivers end up in. It has the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 at 287 horsepower with a nine-speed automatic, power sliding rear doors, seven seats, and Stow 'n Go second and third rows that fold flat into the floor to open up 3,978 litres behind the front seats. Chrysler Canada rates it at 12.4 L/100 km in the city, 8.4 on the highway and 10.6 combined.

It is built in Windsor, Ontario, which matters less for patriotism than for parts: every Stellantis store in the province stocks them. Its weakness is fuel. It is a big V6 van and it drinks like one in downtown traffic, and there is no hybrid version. If that is the deciding factor, keep reading to the Sienna. The Pacifica shares the Grand Caravan's engine, transmission and sliding doors and adds what the Grand Caravan does not offer: an eighth seat on some configurations, all-wheel drive on Select, Limited and Pinnacle, and a cabin that reads as premium from the back row, which is where the rider rating comes from. Cargo with every seat stowed is 3,979 litres, effectively identical to the Grand Caravan.

All-wheel drive is the Toronto argument. A rideshare van works the worst days of the year because that is when demand spikes, and a front-wheel-drive van on the Bayview Extension in a January storm is a slower, more careful day than an AWD Pacifica on the same tires. Whether that is worth the price difference depends on how many of those days you intend to work. The Pacifica Hybrid, a plug-in, is worth a look if most of your day is short downtown trips, but note that since 2025 it does not qualify for Uber Electric, which now takes battery-electric vehicles only.

The Durango is the three-row SUV on the same lot, and plenty of XL drivers prefer an SUV's image and rear-wheel-drive-based AWD. The trap is the second row. A Durango ordered with second-row captain's chairs seats six, which is one seatbelt short of UberXL. The bench-seat version seats seven and qualifies. The SUV also gives up the sliding doors and the flat-folding third row. A hinged rear door on a Durango swings wide at a downtown curb, and the third row folds but does not disappear into the floor, so an airport run with four bags means a bag on a lap or on the roof.

The Toyota Sienna is hybrid-only and is the most fuel-efficient seven- or eight-seat van you can buy in Canada, with all-wheel drive available. For a driver whose fuel bill is the largest line after the payment, it is the rational choice and this page will not pretend otherwise. Its costs are a higher purchase price, long waits on new stock, and a used market that holds its value hard, which is the flip side of the same virtue.

The Honda Odyssey seats eight with the widest second-row flexibility of the group, and the Kia Carnival gives the most van for the money with an SUV silhouette that riders like. Golden Mile Chrysler sells none of the three new. They do turn up on the used lot from trade-ins now and then, and when one does it appears on the used minivans page with its year, kilometres and all-in price. The right way to compare a new van against a used one for rideshare is not the sticker; it is the sticker divided by the number of Toronto seasons the model year buys. Under the City's rule a vehicle must be replaced by March 31 of the year after its seventh model year. From September 2026, a new 2026 buys you six and a half seasons of Toronto pickups. A 2023 buys three and a half. A 2021 buys a season and a half, and then it is a family van.

That arithmetic is why a new Grand Caravan often beats a used Pacifica for a full-time driver even when the used van is the nicer vehicle. Run both numbers before deciding, and if you are looking at a used van, look at its year first and its price second.
